Roughly one quarter of all bananas on tables in the USA and the EU are grown on plantations scattered along Ecuador's coast, where workers' international labor rights are flouted daily. Ecuador, the largest banana exporter in the world, does not adequately enforce its own labor laws. Nor do those laws fully meet international standards. According to this report by Human Rights Watch child labour is common in banana fields and packing plants.
